If you are a kitchenware or tableware manufacturer looking to expand internationally, identifying the right countries to target internationally can be difficult.  This article analyzes import volumes for these products for different countries between 2012 and 2016.  Based on this analysis we identify the fastest growing and largest export markets for these products to help you prioritize your international expansion strategies.


The data in this analysis is from the International Trade Centre (ITC).  It is limited to the following product categories as categorized by the ITC:

Product Group 4419 (Tableware and kitchenware, of wood)

Product Group 6911 (Tableware, kitchenware, other household articles and toilet articles, of porcelain or china)

Product Group 6912 (Tableware, kitchenware, other household articles and toilet articles, of ceramics)

Product Group 7323 (Table, kitchen or other household articles, and parts thereof, of iron or steel)

Product Group 7417 (Copper cooking or heating apparatus of a kind used for domestic purposes, non-electric)

Product Group 7418 (Table, kitchen or other household articles, sanitary ware, and parts thereof, of copper)

Product Group 7615 (Table, kitchen or other household articles, sanitary ware, and parts thereof, of aluminium)

Product Group 8214 (Metal mincing knives and cleavers; metal manicure or pedicure instruments)

Product Group 8215 (Metal spoons, forks, ladles, skimmers, cake-servers, butter-knives, sugar tongs and similar)

Product Group 9604 (Hand sieves and hand riddles)




Kitchenware & Tableware Imports Analysis by Region



We can see that the largest import market for these products is Europe & Central Asia (approximately US$ 17 billion in 2016).  However average annual import growth between 2012 and 2016 was actually negative in this region.  This means entering the market and gaining share would be quite difficult.  However, we can see that North America, East Asia & the Pacific and the Middle East all showed strong growth during this time period with substantial import volume.  Targeting these regions could be easier. 


Targeting countries in your own region of the world first is sometimes the easiest way to start growing intentionally.  We now focus on each one of these regions individually to understand what countries might be your best targets for international expansion.  High import volume and high year over year import growth are two metrics you want to continue focusing on when looking at countries within a specific region.




Kitchenware & Tableware Imports Analysis for East Asia & Pacific Countries



Within East Asia & Pacific, the countries with the highest volume of imports in 2016 are Japan, Australia, South Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, Singapore and Taiwan.  Most of these countries have strong growth with the exception of Japan and Hong Kong.  In addition, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand also have high growth in imports making them a great target for expansion.




Kitchenware & Tableware Imports Analysis for Europe & Central Asia Countries



Within Europe & East Asia, the countries with the highest volume of imports in 2016 are Germany, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Poland.  Most of these countries have positive growth with the exception of France and Belgium.  In addition, Denmark, Sweden, Czech Republic, Ireland and Portugal have good growth in imports although limited volume.




Kitchenware & Tableware Imports Analysis for Latin America & Caribbean Countries



Within Latin America & Caribbean, the countries with the highest volume of imports in 2016 are Mexico, Chile, Brazil, Panama, Peru, Colombia and Guatemala.  Import growth in Mexico, Chile, Peru and Guatemala has also been strong.  In addition, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Cuba have all been posting high growth in imports as well.




Kitchenware & Tableware Imports Analysis for Middle East & North Africa Countries



Within the Middle East & North Africa, the countries with the highest volume of imports in 2016 are the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Israel, Kuwait and Algeria.  All of these countries have strong growth in imports as well.  In addition, Morocco, Lebanon, Djibouti, Oman, Tunisia and Jordan have had high growth in imports although limited volume.




Kitchenware & Tableware Imports Analysis for North America Countries



Within North America, the countries with the highest volume of imports in 2016 are the United States and Canada.  The United States also has strong year over year growth in imports.  




Kitchenware & Tableware Imports Analysis for South Asia Countries



Within South Asia, the countries with the highest volume of imports in 2016 are India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.  Pakistan and Sri Lanka have had quite strong year over year growth in imports as well.  In addition, the Maldives and Nepal have had high growth in imports although limited volume.




Kitchenware & Tableware Imports Analysis for Sub-Saharan Africa Countries



Within Sub-Saharan Africa, the countries with the highest volume of imports in 2016 are South Africa, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Angola, Guinea and Nigeria.  Import growth in Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, Ethiopia and Guinea has been strong as well.  In addition, the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Uganda and Cameroon have had high growth in imports although limited volume.
